October 7, 2002 -- THERE'S an office tower across from Grand Central Terminal where you never see those sad groups of smokers huddled out front like heroin addicts at a methadone clinic.

That's because people who work in this Park Avenue building - the headquarters of tobacco giant Philip Morris - can smoke all they want inside. The company even provides the cigarettes.

Philip Morris lay down with dogs, and is complaining about fleas now.

All Aristo's will come to fear the name of Jacques!

Blanche Yurka as the frightening Madame De Farge: Born to Bohemian parents, American actress Blanche Yurka was awarded a scholarship to a school sponsored by the Metropolitan Opera when she was only 15.

As the vengeful Madame de Farge in A Tale of Two Cities (1935), the actress virtually seared the screen and left even jaded big city audiences emotionally drained. Ironically, she was (by her own admission) the 67th actress to be tested for the role. Nothing Yurka ever did on film afterward would come close to her triumph as DeFarge, though she worked in Hollywood until 1953.

By the bye, what do porn companys allow at the office?

I was in a Philip Morris office just last week. Ashtrays everywhere (empty), and a faint odor of tobacco smoke, but nothing overwhelming.

I only wonder why an antismoking zealot would choose to take a job at a tobacco company.

Time to move the corporate HQ (with all the jobs and tax revenue) to a friendlier location!

For the same reasons that RINO's have infested the Republican Party...

A few years ago I went to Philip Morris' headquarters in Richmond, Virginia to do a computer demo. I was in a sizeable room with about three dozen PM employees.........virtually all of them smoking.

You'd never have known it.

In their buildings.....well, certainly that one.......they had the most unbelievable air filtration / conditioning system you've ever seen. The smoke simply rose and disappeared.....and the system was virtually silent.

Needless to say, I was impressed. :)

Now, as to New York and their (ahem) esteemed Mayor:

Bloomberg and others are somewhat concerned that PM will pack up and leave NY if this law is enforced within their headquarters building there. Fine. Wonder if these geniuses have tallied up how many jobs AND businesses in the restaurant / bar industry will close / leave due to their draconian and nanny-State laws?? Add 'em up, Bloomberg. How many jobs are you ALREADY going to lose? How much revenue are you ALREADY going to lose??

For a so-called businessman, Bloomberg is proving to be a drooling idiot.

"It's disgusting," said one nonsmoker who works for the company. "They chain-smoke at their desk! The first thing I smell when I get to the office is smoke."

If it's so disgusting why don't you find another job????

I'm sorry, but anyone who goes to work for a tobacco company should expect to encounter tobacco smoking - sheesh - how dumb can someone get????

It would make perfect sense for Morris to have nonsmoking areas, like some restaurants might serve liquor only at their bar.

They do. But as a private business which owns their own building, as far as I am concerned they have the right to permit smoking within it's confines if they so choose.

No one is FORCED to work for Philip Morris and therefore no one is FORCED to enter it's headqyarters.

The smart thing to do would be for PM to move it's HQ out of NYC. Maybe mayor Bloominidiot would realize just how much of an idiot he really is.

I can't believe this lady can't find a job more to her liking, I am amazed that an ANTI such as her will even want to work there.

PM should move their headquarters elsewhere, they won't as they have become yes-men for the ANTI's

So what does Phillip Morris do that bothers you?

Hey, if you don't want any of their yummy, delicious cigarettes just leave 'em there on the rack at the Stop 'n' Rob.

Philip Morris threatened to abandon New York (and take thousands of jobs with it) if the anti-smoking law passed.

I'm sure the threat still stands. Why would they put up with this? Bloomberg is just going to look like an idiot when this is over.

One of my top ten all time great movies. Thanks for the picture, Buff.

Does anyone know when it is going to be on DVD? I understand Ted Turner owns the rights, so there must be something in there that upsets him.

Another reason to love the film.
